Things To Do: In the area

Our home is set beside the old road to the West Coast, just 10 kilometres from Christchurch, and a 10 minute drive to the Airport and Antarctic Centre. We live on the site of the Miners Arms Hotel the first stagecoach posting house from Christchurch to the West Coast in the 1860s and 1870s hence the name the property has been known by ever since.

We are on the Canterbury Plains, with the Banks peninsula to the East of us and the Southern Alps to the West. The Waimakariri River runs a couple of kilometres from us, and our stock water race takes its water from the river.

Its a great area for fishing and walking and there are several golf courses nearby. Jet boating on the river is great fun for the more adventurous, and those of you who prefer a birds eye view can take a balloon excursion over the whole area.

There are very good wineries and restaurants close by, with the suburbs of Hornby, Rolleston and Riccarton only a few minutes drive. Jo Saegers new restaurant is at Oxford, a picturesque village towards the mountains.

Orana Park Zoo is 5 minutes from us, and Willowbank Wildlife park is not far from the Airport.

If you're interested in history the Yaldhurst Motor Museum is only 4 kilometres from us, while Wigram Air Museum is in Hornby.

We can be in the mountains at Arthurs Pass within 50 minutes in one direction and on the beach at Sumner within 30 minutes in the other direction. The Banks peninsula and Christchurch City are only 15 minutes away.
