Things To Do: Day Trips

Arthurs Pass and the West Coast. Arthurs pass is a 2 hour drive from here, but if you take the Transalpine train, you can experience all the grandeur of the scenery from here to the West coast and back in a day.

If you enjoy Winter ski-ing, you can choose from 5 ski-fields en-route to Arthurs Pass.

Kaikoura is three hours north of us and well worth a visit if whale and dolphin watching is your interest. There is also a large seal colony there, and very picturesque coastal walks. The scenery along the coastal road is stunning. The railway also runs along the coast and is a great way to sit back and enjoy the view.

Hanmer is a pretty two hour drive north of us, the road passes through the wine growing area of the Waipara valley. If you enjoy wine tours, this is the place for you. Hanmer itself is on the edge of the Alps in a glorious mountain setting, but Hanmers real claim to fame is the hot mineral pools in the village. It's also a great centre for hiking.

Akaroa is a picturesque fishing and boating village with French origins which is a beautiful 2 hour drive from us, up over the crater rim, through sea inlet and mountain scenery, passing wineries and a cheese factory. Akaroa is a pretty place to walk around, with plenty of small shops to explore and the opportunity to take a boat tour of the harbour or swim with dolphins.
